Photo Shoot Plan 3

Date and time of photo shoot: 17-18th October 2011
Material to be shot: Photos for my “A Night to Remember feature

What personnel do you need?
Lighting assistant: Rachel Aspey
Makeup assistant: Rachel Aspey, Ashleigh Jones

Models: Beth Gibson, Emma Burgess, Katie Toman, Abi Grieveson, Katharine Aspey

What props will you need?

This photo-shoot will be split into two different photo shoots, one outside and one inside. I have been looking at the type of props I could use to make my photos look appropriate for my feature. By doing some research, I have decided to use a classic British red telephone box in my photo-shoot. This is because this as a prop in an image tends to look very glamorous, which is what I am aiming for in this shoot. It also emphasises that whilst proms were originally an American idea, that British proms are big deals too and just as glamorous.

I will also be using a black car as the background to some of my images to represent the limousines traditionally used to get to prom. This will look good against my model’s dresses and will help to make the whole thing look even more glamorous.

The final prop I will incorporate into my outdoor photo-shoot is a black door. This is again a symbol to the British as it is a landmark in the form of 10 Downing Street. Getting a model, especially in a cream or white dress to pose against this will look very effective and again, add glamour to the photos.

I will not use props for my photo-shoot in the studio as it is not necessary and would just add irrelevance in a plain setting.

Describe in detail your make-up & costume needs.

The main focus of the feature for my fashion magazine is the fashion, obviously, in this case the dresses. I will try my best to get at least one of each style mentioned in the article although transporting a model and a massive dress may be an issue so the biggest of dresses might have to be missed out. I will make sure I have a good variety of all other prom dresses to make up for this, including fishtail dresses, bodycon dresses, short dresses, long dresses with tight skirts, flared skirts and loose skirts.

I will try to get a variety of makeup and hair styles to give my readers even more ideas for their own prom or special occasion. Different looks will include blander make up and then more dramatic make up with false eyelashes and bright red lipstick. The hair however will be the main focus. I will try to get at least one of each of the following styles...

Complete up-dos, with all hair scraped back

Half down / half up dos with a full fringe.

Mainly tied up with a loose, wavy middle parted fringe.

All down and wavy, with a centre parting.

I will use a mix of blonde and brown haired models so all of my audience will be represented.

Photoshoot Plan 1 & 2

Date and time of photo shoot 1: 9:00am on Monday 16th January 2012

Material to be shot: The ‘Sunway Runway’ features.

What personnel do you need?

Lighting assistant: Chris Marriner
Makeup assistant: Rachel Aspey and Ashleigh Jones
Models: Zoe Skerrett, Ashleigh Jones and Beth Gibson

What props will you need?
For my contents page and front cover, I will not need any props as these images will only have the model in them, posing with nothing else. For the feature shots, there are a number of props I will need to make it a truly summer-themed photoshoot. This will include props such as holiday-themed backgrounds as decoration and other types of decoration, such as a folding chair. Other props will include beach towels, hula necklaces and summer fruits, like bananas and apples, also promoting healthy eating and flowers that are most commonly associated with summer. These will invite my audience into the scene easily, as well as making them want to be the people in the photos. Hats and sunglasses will be present also to get the complete look.

Describe in detail your make-up & costume needs.
The make-up for the models will be normal and summery. I don’t want their eyes to be too dark but will have mascara on, emphasising their eyes. Their skin will look healthy and fresh, with no bright blusher for example and nail varnish cannot be a black or extremely dark in colour. Pale colours will be necessary for nails, with nice skin colours and warm lip colours with the use of pink or red lipstick, keeping the look feminine but still natural.

Costumes will be summer outfits, such as shorts, dresses, vest tops and skirts. Accessories will be vital, such as hats, sunglasses and flip flops. I will make sure each model has a number of different clothing choices to make sure there is a choice. I have made one outfit choice for each model and allowed them to bring a choice of their own. One of my outfit choices was a necessary summery patterned dress, shorts and a top and a dungaree skirt option. This is to ensure that there is a mix of styles in my feature for different tastes amongst my target audience. I also made sure there was a mix of clothes, swimwear and accessories so that I can provide my readers with everything they will need. The feature is based on the necessities for summer holidays or just summer in general, so the costume is vital. Sunglasses and a straw hat will be a definite requirement for my feature.

Date and time of photo shoot: 9:00am on 16th January 2012

Material to be shot: Front Cover and Contents Page

What personnel do you need?

Lighting assistant: Chris Marriner
Makeup assistant: Zoe Skerrett
Models: Ashleigh Jones

What props will you need?
Because this photoshoot is only for the front cover, I will not require any props, only a model.

Describe in detail your make-up & costume needs.
I want the makeup to be quite plain for this. I want my model to wear a nice coloured foundation, have a bit of colour, a bit of mascara and also have lipstick on. I want the outfit to be black as I aim to make the model herself to stand out the most, like the examples below.

I plan for my model to have two different outfits for this photoshoot so I have a choice of which looks best. I have a tight-fitting playsuit and a glittery dress lined up so that my model looks attractive and modern, a role model to my target audience.

Studio shoots: what kind of lighting?
I will be using butterfly lighting for both shots, as used in glamour shots, to create as little shadows as possible and to make my models look very feminine. This will make my images look very professional and will be flattering to my models.

Backdrop:
My background will be plain white. I will try to use “scene setters” for the 'Sunway Runway' but they have a shiny plastic finish which may reflect off the flash and ruin the photos. For the photo shoot for my front cover and contents page, I will just need a plain white backdrop as I plan to cut my model out of the background.

Lighting equipment needs:
I would need a Key Light, Fill Light and possibly a soft box.

Contingency Plans - Top 10 Project Killers

What could go wrong during production
How are you going to avoid this issue? What’s your back up plan?

  1. Models may not turn up, whether they can’t make it, have exams or simply forget.
I am going to make sure that the days I book my equipment and the studio are days that have been agreed on and double checked with my models, making sure they are available. I also plan to go to meetings with my models to double check the dates, make sure everyone is agreed and the shoot can go ahead. As I know my models on a personal basis, I can remind them via the internet the night before or via text so that the chances of forgetfulness will be minimised on the model front. I will also make sure that I have more models than necessary arranged to meet with me on the day, so that if one or even two back out, I will still have plenty of models to photograph and work with, to get professional images that will be good enough for my final product, saving time without an excess of contingency photo shoots.

  1. The props for my photo shoots could disappear.

I could lose my props if I leave them in the studio or around college. Even if I leave them at home, they could easily be forgotten on the day of my photo shoot and there might not be time to organise another one, the studio might be fully booked up or my models might not all be available at the same time as me again. To prevent this, once I have gathered all the props I will need, I will put them into a plastic box or boxes with a lid and keep them in the boot of my car. Once in the car, I will not remove them until the day of the photoshoot where they will be impossible to forget due to the fact that wherever I go, my car will be. This will ensure that the issue is avoided.

  1. Font not installed on C drives

As I will be working on a lot of computers over the entire production time, fonts that I have installed and used on one machine will not be installed on all. I will save the fonts as zip folders onto my space, so that they are available to install on whichever college computer I use. I will also make a note of the names of the fonts and visit the website dafont.com at home to install the same fonts onto my home computers. This means that wherever I’m working I am able to access the correct fonts, either by noting where they are located online or by saving the files to my space and memory stick.

  1. Memory sticks getting lost or becoming corrupt.

Whilst using a memory stick is a vital and useful part of production in terms of saving and transporting my current work, I will have to be careful that all the work I have completed is not only saved on a memory stick and can be accessible in different places at the time I need it. To avoid losing work, I will save it on the computer I am working on in college, my memory stick and my home computer to make sure I have enough copies if something goes terribly wrong. Also, if I need to do work at home and am working to a deadline, I cannot afford to miss a night out and wait until I am back at college to continue if files on my memory stick do become corrupt. To avoid this issue I will also save an online copy of my work on hotmail and email a copy home. This means that wherever I am, I can access my work and continue working on it.

  1. Sometimes, just as you are getting to the end of a large piece of work on the computer, it crashes and you can lose 2 or more hours worth of work.

This is a major setback that will waste time and can leave me struggling to keep up to date with my schedule. As I am working, every few minutes I will keep clicking ‘Save’. It’s so basic and easy to do but can make a massive difference and save you from having to redo masses of work.

  1. Running out of network space

This is a problem when using college computers and potentially home computers. There is a limit on the amount of space each person can have, meaning that eventually you will reach the limit and cannot save anymore, which is a nightmare when needing to save changes to the final product. To avoid this issue I will look through all of my work, deleting irrelevant documents and out of date work from last year, making sure it is not needed anymore. I will not waste network space with things like music and personal images, saving it for the important files, like my final products and all that accompanies this.

  1. Cameras running out of batteries

The last thing I need is for my camera to run out of battery power half way through my shoot when images are still needed. To avoid this, I will check with Chris, the college technician that the camera is fully charged or at least has enough charge for the amount of time I have booked it for. I will also carry my own batteries as an extra back up to avoid any issues when shooting.

  1. Having to abandon photo shoots that have been planned as external due to bad weather

There is not a great deal I can do to prevent the weather ruining plans to get my images. As a contingency plan, I could arrange more than one occasion everyone is available to do the photoshoot, using one as a backup. If the first doesn’t go ahead then I can rely on the second and if the first is successful, then I can tell my models that a second shoot is not necessary. Another way I will try to avoid this issue is by undertaking most of my photo shoots indoors in the studio. At this time of year, the lighting and studio equipment will probably make my final product have a far more professional appearance to it.

9)      Photographs coming back out of focus after a difficult photo shoot has just been executed

Throughout the photoshoot, I will keep checking the images on the camera to make sure they are in focus. I will use the zoom to see up close if the images are okay and if not, I will retake the images, saving time with no further contingency shoots.

10)   Photo shoots taking a long time to set up so that you are only left with a short time to get pictures and there might not enough time scheduled for difficult or complex shoots

I will have to practice setting up an area beforehand to see how long it will take and make allowances for this when booking the studio time. Instead of arranging separate shoots, I will try to make the shoots slightly longer so I don’t have to set up more than once and can try to get all the shots I want first time. I will book more time than is necessary, to make sure that I do not run short of time. If a shoot finishes earlier than I thought, it is not a problem. It is only a problem the other way around, if I need more time than I have.

My Weekly Monotoring Blog – 6th January 2012

This week my schedule states that on Monday, I will have created an organised file structure to store my work so that I know where everything is and to avoid confusion. This includes both my computer file structure and my physical folder structure. Tuesday was meant to be used to gather and collect my props ready for my “Sunway Runway” photoshoot next week. Wednesday was meant to be the photoshoot for the cover and contents page. Thursday was meant to be a review lesson, reviewing the images from my photoshoot and picking out the images I believe to be best. Over the weekend I am meant to be testing out my equipment for the next photoshoot and experimenting with Photoshop and Indesign on the images I have captured this week.
I am happy with my file structures. My computer is completely organised and the irrelevant documents have been deleted. As you can see I have seperated my folders by the current education level I am at (AS or A2) and then organised folders into subject areas, and then to keep things as simple as possible, I have organised my folders into years 2011 and 2012. This will help define where my new work and production and planning starts and where my research and previous work before the christmas/new year holidays ends. I also organised my other media work into a folder with dividers so that I can refer back to my previous material if I need any help or guidance from my research work.

There was a slight change to my schedule this week, as I intended to shoot my cover and contents page shots first and then move onto my “Sunway Runway”. However, because I had collected my props on Tuesday, inkeeping with my schedule and I had not yet decided on outfit choices for my front cover / contents page shots, I chose to swap them around. This means that although the images are not what I intended originally, it is still one of my photoshoots done. Infact the photoshoot that took place on Tuesday was probably the biggest as more images were required and there was the need for props and transport. Due to my planning, I was prepared earlier than I had thought for this photoshoot so instead of wasting time in the studio, I used it for what I was best prepared for.
I believe that my client would be pleased with this week because I have made progress and can begin looking at the images, editing them and making them as best as can be. I am pleased withmy work and actually believe that I have benefitted from the swap as I have completed what I considered to be the hardest shoot first.
Here are some of the images taken in this weeks “Sunway Runway” photoshoot. Using my contingency plans, I had asked 3 models to turn up to make sure that I had 2 at least that I required. In the end, all 3 models turned up, which was not a problem and actually offered me a greater choice for images and poses. The props were planned and provided by me and I had made sure that on my models there would be examples of at least one shorts & tshirt combination, a flower-patterened summer dress, dungarees, swimwear and a couple of accessories too, including a hat and sunglasses. I am quite happy with the outcome of my images. The poses look how I wanted them to and it does give off an overall summer-time vibe. I was happy with the amount of props I used, as it did make the pictures look colourful and definately added to the summer vibe I was trying to create. The predominant colour in this photoshoot was yellow because I believe this is a warm colour that people will often associate with summer and the sun. For a lot of my shots I tried to keep the poses quite natural, very happy and get a feeling of excitement for the summer time.

Here, I was looking for a casual style photo with the group of girls having a laugh, enjoying themselves dressed in there summer outfits. The props I used also helped to create levels in my images, with Beth sat on the towel, Zoe stood up and Ashleigh at the half-way height, posed on a chair. The colour yellow was very much present in this picture, with the flows, towel and Zoe’s top. I really like the overall look of this image and think it reflects what I am trying to do well.

Zoe looks very casual and comfortable sat down on this beach towel. This pose gives the reader a good relaxed impression of my model and how comfortable she is in the outfit mentioned. The sunglasses add to the affect, making it look even more like summer time.

The two above images are very good examples of showing the dress off. The model is the centre of attention and to make this even more apparent, I chose not to include any props into this image. My model looks very happy  and very relaxed in both images. Whilst I like the second pose because it looks very natural and my model looks very happy, the first one is more likely to be used in my final product as it looks more professional and the dress itself looks better in this pose. However, I could use either, depending on the theme of images I choose to use. I could choose to have more natural imagery, although I will probably use the chosen poses as a priority.

This is an image I really wanted to capture, of my model throwing her hat up into the air. This portrays excitement and freedom. You see this type of thing in final graduation celebrations, for example. Although the hat is a bit out of focus, this could still potentially be used in my final product, either as it is, making the imagery more realistic to my readers or I may super impose a focused hat into the image on Photoshop.

Again, this image seems to be tiered again in height and because I took the photo from a step ladder, looking down on the girls, it looked very affective. The models, especially Beth, are looking directly at the camera, giving them an attitude. Each has a flower pattern on, but they do not clash. This is a good combination of different styles, including the sunglasses and hat. I really like this photo, although Ashleigh seems dark, as she is sat back, in the shadow of the other models. This is something I could fix on Photoshop.

I particularly like this image as it looks very natural and relaxed. Having my models looking relaxed and happy portrays the right message to my target audience and makes my model look desireable in the sense that my audience will want to be her or like her. She looks very stylish and comfortable in her clothes which will encourage my audience to read on and discover how to get the look.

Obviously, no summer themed photoshoot would be missing swimwear. My model does not look out of place and her poses are confident, looking directly at the camera for added effect. The bikini she is wearing is a nice pattern and colour and general style and is likely to be popular with my target audience. My model also has a good figure which can be something my readers wish to achieve.

This image again reflects my target audience as a fun-loving, happy and stylish group of young girls. This photo looks relaxed and casual and portrays happiness and friendship. My target audience will be able to relate to this image and compare themselves and their friends to my models, based on age, style and the type of pose we have above. It is likely I use this image in my final product.
